The Grasslands Trust

Explore the grasslands

We believe that "people still need meadows, downlands and other grasslands full of wildlife, not just because they clean our water, or bring in tourist pounds, but because they improve our quality of life and wellbeing."

Grasslands are our most evocative wildlife habitats but they also provide a link with our distant and not so distant past. Wildflower meadows and chalk downlands may be ideal places for a picnic or a Sunday walk but not so long ago though they played a central part in the economy and society of Britain. Meadows provided fuel for transport in the form of hay for horses; downland and other pasture put meat and dairy products on the tables of town and country; and stock fed on grasslands provided the fertility to grow arable crops like wheat and vegetables, before artificial fertilisers were invented. Flowers and herbs provided medicine and food before modern medicine developed.

But are our grasslands now just luxury items we can afford to live without? We don't think so. The Grasslands Trust believes that grasslands are important for everyone and that's why they need protecting.
