The Grasslands Trust

Our work

- Campaigning & lobbying -

Common Blue warming in the early sun

We are currently working on a number of policy issues, which are explained here.

A Policy update from Miles King, Conservation Director. July 2010.

With the Coalition Government cutting back on Environmental Priorities, what does the radical overhaul of the planning system mean for our glorious grasslands?

A policy update from our conservation director - how will the 2010 Election result effect our work?

Now the dust has started to settle, and a new prime minister has walked into Downing Street, what does the Election result mean for our wildlife-rich grasslands?

Biodiversity Action

Recent devolution of the Biodiversity Action Plan process across the UK is providing The Grasslands Trust with new opportunities to influence thinking...

Biodiversity Offsets

The Grasslands Trust has been talking to the Conservative party...

Ecotowns and Green Infrastructure

The Grasslands Trust has been working closely with the Town and Country Planning Association, Natural England and other partners to develop guidance on Green Infrastructure for those organisations bidding for the chance to build eco-towns across England.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) (Agriculture) Regulations 2006

The Grasslands Trust is leading a campaign to reform existing agriculture regulations in order to strengthen their protection of grasslands.

Environmental Stewardship and Common Agricultural Policy Reform

We are concerned that too much is being spent by the government to support intensive food production but not enough on implementing Environmental Schemes to encourage wildlife-friendly farming.

Local Grassland Projects

Local Grassland Projects can achieve real results for conservation by working directly with landowners who manage wildlife-rich grasslands. Local Grassland Projects include Pastures New in Dorset, Reconnecting the Culm in Devon, Limestone Landscapes in Durham, and Hay Time projects in the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines. There are now many different Local Grassland Projects operating throughout England. They are mostly partnerships involving Local Wildlife Trusts, Natural England, National Parks or AONB partrnerships, and Local Authorities, among others.

Renewable Energy Directive

Biofuels: Rainforests cleared to grow oil palms is not the only cause of environmental damage..... proposals from the EC could lead to biofuel crops being grown on areas of highly valuable grassland across the world. The Grasslands Trust has been working with Defra to try and stop grasslands here and elsewhere from being destroyed to grow biofuels.

Wales Meadows Manifesto

The Grasslands Trust has taken solid steps towards overcoming the threats facing the Welsh grasslands.
