The Grasslands Trust

Our work

97% of our lowland meadows have disappeared since the Second World War. One in five of our wild plants are facing extinction. In many parts of the UK only tiny pockets of ancient grasslands remain, unprotected and highly vulnerable to development, neglect or agricultural intensification.

Somehow we need to stop this catastrophic loss which is why The Grasslands Trust exists. We are the UK's only national charity that concentrates all its efforts on protecting our beautiful wildlife-rich grasslands and flowery meadows. Our mission is to secure and protect grasslands now and for the future. Our long term aims are to see:

  • More threatened grassland sites saved
  • More grasslands re-established and re-created
  • The value of grasslands and the challenges of their conservation more widely recognised by the public, landowners and policy makers.
  • Policy mechanisms to protect grasslands working better.
  • Local grasslands available to local people.

Our vision is that one day everyone will live close to a wildlife-rich grassland.
